Boobam drums |
Bill Loughborough's Boobam drums are
tubular drums made of ABS pipes that are tuned by varying the pipe
length. The drum heads are made of clear flexible plastic. Compact
and light, they produce a great sound and can fit into tight spaces.
They can be played with mallets or by hand or with the fingers.
The accompanying sound sample is played fingerstyle, by the maker. Many bands such as the popular Blue Man Group use
ABS
or PVC pipe.
The pipes are cut to exact lengths and played by striking one of the open ends with a closed-cell foam rubber paddle.
These types of drums are somewhat based on the bamboo instruments used in Gamelan joged bumbung and Gamelan jegog ense music. |
